Sony BMG News | RCA Wins Record Company of the Year
RCA’s credentials as the leading record label of 2007 were fully endorsed last night when they won MusicWeek’s most prestigious award, Record Company of the Year. The award goes to the company which achieves the most in terms of market share, working successful album projects, and breaking new artists.
The success of RCA, headed up by Craig Logan, was down to a strong focus on A&R, yielding chart topping sales from The Hoosiers, Newton Faulkner, strong international sales from artists such as Natasha Bedingfield, and RCA’s partnership with Syco, achieving international superstardom for Leona Lewis.
While RCA is now building successful international careers for these acts, it is also focussing on the next wave of UK talent with high hopes for new acts like The Script, Sam Beaton and Ida Maria.
International acts on the RCA label also played their part with artists such Justin Timberlake, Pink, The Fray, and Britney Spears. RCA also has a strong line up of artist albums for 2008, including new albums from Usher, Will Young, Beyonce, Rod Stewart and Dido.
“This is a great achievement for Craig and his team,” says Ged Doherty, Chairman of SONY BMG Music Entertainment UK & Ireland. “Sony BMG led the industry in breaking new acts last year. We plan to do the same this year.”
“I’m thrilled that we have won this award” says Craig Logan, MD RCA Label Group, “Over the last couple of years we have built a great team. Our focus is A&R and getting the music right. We now have established a great platform for RCA to go on to even bigger and better things this year as we continue to build up our fantastic roster of artists.”
Jay-Z, DJ AM Reopen Hollywood’s Palladium
After undergoing a major remodel, Hollywood’s historic Palladium Theatre reopened with a bang Wednesday night thanks to an enthralling performance from Jay-Z and DJ AM. A sold-out crowd gathered for the set, which saw the hip-hop mogul and his DJ play for nearly two hours.
In homage to Frank Sinatra, the first artist to ever perform at the venue, Jay-Z was backed by a 12-piece band dressed in matching white dress shirts, black vests and ties. At one moment during the night he even jokingly referred to himself as “old brown eyes.”
However, the story of the night was DJ AM, a.k.a. Adam Goldstein, who made his first public performance since surviving a fiery plane crash last month. Singing along, waving his arms, and even pulling out and pointing to his wallet during a classic Jay-Z line about money, the mix-master looked like he was certainly enjoying himself. When called out by the MC during an introduction of the band, DJ AM received deafening cheers as he placed his hand over his heart and waved a peace sign to the crowd. Jay-Z also took a second to mention ex-Blink drummer Travis Barker, who was also critically injured in the place crash, as well as the four others who sadly lost their lives in the September accident.

Jay-Z’s performance ran deep into his repertoire. After taking a short break at the end of his first set, he emerged with a towel around his neck and took over AM’s decks. The artist born Shawn Carter evoked screams and chants while playing snippets of crowd faves only to stop the song and start another seconds later — kind of like a child with attention deficit disorder playing with iTunes.
The night was full of surprises — including a Jay-Z’s rant on politics, stressing his support of Barack Obama and the importance of the approaching election. But the set’s highlight arrived with the introduction of T.I., who whipped the already ecstatic crowd into a frenzy. To calm his fans he gave out an unopened bottle of his favorite bubbly, Cristal. The night, chock full of left turns, also saw Carter dive into first verse of the Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and rap over classic Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg beats while revealing his love for West Coast fans.
After commanding the crowd for the duration of his action packed performance, Jay-Z concluded with Black Album favorite “Encore” and walked offstage with the 12-piece band blaring the refrain. Sinatra would have been proud.

F*cked Up for 12 Hours Straight!
Eat your heart out, New York Marathon. Those headbanging neighbors from Canada, Fucked Up, undertook a decidedly different test of endurance yesterday, playing a 12-hour concert in a Manhattan boutique to celebrate the release of their second full-length album, The Chemistry of Common Life.
The show’s first half, which kicked off at 2 P.M., saw guest appearances from the likes of Moby and Vivian Girls. But the band’s endurance was really tested after 8 P.M., as lead howler Pink Eyes and Co. pushed forward and the crowd circulated rumors regarding guest appearances from Mobb Deep, Akon, and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.
Sadly, hip-hop and R&B’s finest didn’t show — although Koenig did turn in several rousing hardcore covers with Fucked Up, as well as a performance of the Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop,” as the crowd alternately moshed and heckled him for his efforts. In addition to Koenig’s appearance, punk lifer John Joseph of seminal hardcore act Cro-Mags, Dinosaur Jr.’s legendary axeman J Mascis, and former Chavez frontman Matt Sweeney all turned in searing guest performances.
Despite the cadre of musical royalty in attendance, it was clear the show belonged to Fucked Up. Turning in sharp blasts of shoegaze-influenced hardcore isn’t exactly easy when your fans, who were fueled by plentiful amounts of free booze, are as intoxicated and rabble-rousing as your name implies. Luckily, the band remained unaffected as they tore through Chemistry crowd-pleasers (”Black Albino Bones”) and catalog oddities alike (their limited-edition Christmas single) with total aplomb.
Shorted-out mics, malt-liquor drenched equipment, and a somewhat-too-extended break (two hours of not-so-funny comic duo Earles and Jensen and snooze-a-palooza set from noodling rockers Endless Boogie? Really?) threatened to derail the night — and in a way, they did, as Pink Eyes announced they would be ending a half hour early before tearing into fan favorite “Crusades” as the credits to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure rolled on a projection screen behind the band. Paul Reubens at a hardcore show? Now that’s fucked up.
